Using the APM model, SAT has demonstrated that integrated mobile computing technology using a rules-based workflow model is able to guide maintenance and operations personnel through predefined procedures for recording test and measurement information in near-real time, and provide resultant data for use by plant managers and control engineers.

The APM workflow model addresses the need for monitoring equipment and collecting data outside of a Distributed Control System (DCS). Except for very modern process manufacturing facilities, less than half of the valves, motors, turbines, compressors, fans, pumps, tanks, and other equipment in most plants are monitored by real-time Distributed Control Systems and manufacturing decision support systems.

However, to eliminate abnormal operating situations, increase plant process throughput, and improve overall plant equipment reliability, there is an ever-growing need for manual capture of temperatures, pressures, vibrations, cavitations, U-values, water conductivity, gas concentrations, valve loading, spills and leaks, and other safety and operating condition data.
